Demo against drainage flow into houses

Residents of Natesan Nagar, Hasthinapuram at Chromepet on Tuesday staged a demonstration protesting against Pallavaram Municipality for failing to prevent sewage from entering their houses.

CHENNAI: Residents of Natesan Nagar, Hasthinapuram at Chromepet on Tuesday staged a demonstration protesting against Pallavaram Municipality for failing to prevent sewage from entering their houses.
They complained that storm water drain and underground sewerage were choked due to obstructions, mostly plastic and other solid waste.

During the recent rain, storm water drains were completely blocked and following the recent showers in the past couple of days, drains began to overflow and started entering houses. Several households in the area were affected, they said. To draw the municipality’s attention, residents resorted to the protest. They were supported by office-bearers of Federation of Civic and Welfare Residents of Pallavaram Municipality.
On a plea from Chitlapakkam police station personnel, the residents refrained from protesting on the streets, but resorted to a demonstration.

Federation members raised slogans, urging the local body to act immediately. After being informed by police, municipal engineers reached the spot and after a patient hearing from the agitated residents, assured them that the problems would be solved in two days. They said they would deploy sewage clearing tankers to remove the blocks.

Protest against eviction

Elsewhere at Varadarajapuram, near Tambaram, residents protested against Kancheepuram district administration’s move to evict encroachments as part of its ongoing drive against unauthorised structures.
