3-year jail for British national in Nellai child abuse case

A Tirunelveli court awarded three years imprisonment to British national Jonathan Robinson and slapped a fine of Rs 10, 500 in a child sexual abuse case.

TIRUNELVELI: A Tirunelveli court awarded three years imprisonment to British national Jonathan Robinson and slapped a fine of Rs 10, 500 in a child sexual abuse case.

Representatives of a voluntary organisation, Justice and Care of Bangalore, had approached Tirunelveli Child Welfare Committee on August 12, 2011 and gavve a written complaint that a child was allegedly sexually abused and tortured by Jonathan Robinson (69) .

Based on the complaint, Child Welfare Committee took the matter to Tirunelveli SP Vijayendra S Bidari, under whose instructions a team raided Grail Trust Children Home at Chinnamalpuram near Vallioor and rescued the victim. The child was handed over to Saranalayam, a reception unit of Tirunelveli Child Welfare Committee. Vallioor Police registered booked Robinson on August 18, 2011 and posted a lookout notice.

The child was a class IX student when the abuse took place. He was taken to various locations by Robinson, including Shimla.

The police registered case under sections 342, 363, 368, 377 read with 511 of the IPC and section 23 of Juvenile Justice Act.

The case was tried by Vallioor Judicial Magistrate Court.

The charge sheet copies were issued to Jonathan Robinson on November 27, 2015. After the hearing, Vallioor Judicial Magistrate M Senthil Kumar awarded three years sentence to Jonathan Robinsion and slapped a fine of `10, 500.

Robinson was taken into custody by the Vallioor police. However, Robinson got bail from the same court later.
