CHENNAI: Electricity Minister P Thangamani, one of the confidants of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, on Saturday night met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Raj Bhavan, where he is staying for the night. The meeting lasted around 15 minutes, sources said. The meeting assumes significance in the present political scenario in Tamil Nadu. Four days ago, Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan held an hour-long discussion with the Chief Minister at his residence.

Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam’s recent revelation that the Prime Minister had indeed played a key role in the merger of AIADMK factions led to the speculations. There were expectations that the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister might call on the Prime Minister at the Raj Bhavan to take up some schemes related to State government. Though it did not happen, Thangamani met the Prime Minister. Meanwhile, Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, BJP MP L Ganesan, BJP State president Tamilisai Soundararajan, principal secretary Jayaraj, party treasurer Annamalai, and BJP education council member Parthasarathi also met Prime Minister Modi.

Significantly, perhaps for the first time, Modi halted in Chennai. After launching the Amma Two-Wheeler Scheme, he drove to Raj Bhavan and he was received by Governor Banwarilal Purohit and his wife. Later, both hosted a dinner for him. On Sunday, the Prime Minister will leave for Puducherry around 9 am and would reach there at 10.45 am to participate in a function at Auroville Foundation on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee Week. He will return to Chennai airport at 4.30 pm and proceed to Surat.
