COIMBATORE:  The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has planned to construct a cross drain from Coimbatore railway station to Valankulam Lake and widen the stormwater drains at Lanka Corner junction railway underpass to avoid waterlogging during the rainy season.

The Lanka Corner underpass is one of the vital junctions in the city, which connects Town Hall with Coimbatore junction at State Bank Road and Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) at Tiruchy Road. There are two one-way subways at the junction which is used by motorists.

During rainy season, the subway gets inundated in rainwater, making it difficult for the motorists.
District collector Kranthi Kumar Pati and with CCMC commissioner M Prathap inspected the Lanka Corner subway on Tuesday and directed officials to sort out the water logging problem.

CCMC sources said a large sump would be built under the traffic island between two subways on the road.
“The sump will have a capacity of storing 1 to 2 lakh litres of water. Once constructed, we shall use motor pumps and pump out the water from the sump. With this, the rainwater will enter the sump, and water stagnation in the subways can be avoided. All the drain and sump construction works will cost around `1.5 crore,” added the official.

Prathap told TNIE, “We will widen the drains in the Lanka Corner junction and also build a cross drain from the channel near the railway station to avoid waterlogging in the railway underpass. Both the additional drains and the cross drains will be channeled to the Valankulam water body behind the GH bus stop and drained there. The works will begin soon and we shall try to finish it before the monsoon.”
