COIMBATORE:  The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation(CCMC) has begun work to make the old Avinashi Flyover colourful using vibrant paintings.

Despite strong criticism from public and activists, several political parties continued to stick posters on the walls and pillars of the old Avinashi Flyover. In this situation, similar to the Gandhipuram flyover, CCMC, in collaboration with a couple of organisations, decided to give it a makeover by painting the walls and pillars. Paintings of beautiful sceneries, birds, animals, destinations and traditional occupations are being created on the pillars of the flyover by talented artists from across the city.

Speaking to TNIE, CCMC Deputy Commissioner Dr M Sharmila said they’ve started painting the walls of the Lanka Corner railway underpass and the pillars of the Avinashi road Flyover in the city using CSR funds, adding they’ve received a good response from the people for the initiative.

“The prime motive behind the move is to prevent individuals and political parties from sticking posters on the walls and pillars of public property. We had already conducted a meeting in the past with poster printers in the city about the issue.

We shall soon be organising another meeting with printers, political parties, poster-pasting workers and police department officials to stop this poster culture. To initiate strict and legal action, an official complaint will be lodged with the police and a FIR will be filed against those individuals who stick posters on the walls and paintings despite the warnings,” she added.
