CHENNAI:  Close on the heels of Chief Minister MK Stalin suing Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai for ‘DMK files’, senior DMK leader and Lok Sabha member TR Baalu on Friday filed a defamation case against the BJP leader.

The case, filed before  XVII- metropolitan magistrate court under section 199 (1) and 200 of Criminal Procedure Code, seeks action against Annamalai for raising allegations without substantial evidence ‘which amounts to defamation and thus attracts penal provisions under sections 499 and 500 of Indian Penal Code.’

Baalu said the defamatory statements were issued with a malicious intention to harm his reputation and defame him before the public. Pointing out that he has been in public life for more than 65 years and held various positions in the government, including a Central minister, Baalu said Annamalai has resorted to defame, scandalise and tarnish his reputation as he could not make a mark electorally and could not be elected to any public office.

Baalu said the ‘DMK files’ released by Annamalai on April 14 contains several vile and reckless statements about him that are per se false, defamatory and has scandalous imputations. Saying that only one of his sons, TRB Rajaa, is in public life and holding the office of a minister, Baalu said displaying the names of his spouse and children, who are not in public life, violated their right to privacy and the accused is liable to be prosecuted for the same.
