TIRUNELVELI:  As many as 24 police personnel, including a few officers who were named as accused in the alleged custodial torture FIR along with suspended ASP Balveer Singh, were transferred by Superintendent of Police N Silambarasan on Thursday.

Four sub-inspectors and four special sub-inspectors were among the officers who were transferred. While one of them was transferred to a station within the Ambasamudram police division, the others were posted to other police divisions in Tirunelveli district. Murugesan, Boga Booman, Vignesh, Manikandan, and a few other police personnel, who found place on the transfer list, were reportedly present when Balveer Singh allegedly removed the teeth of suspects.

Speaking to TNIE, one of the custody torture victims said the police transferred the accused police personnel only about two months after the torture took place.  “Even after a few of them were earlier transferred to vacancy reserve, they continued to threaten the victims and even attempted to destroy the evidence from police stations. The state government has failed to suspend and arrest the accused policemen,” he claimed.
