Shell bangle and ivory dice unearthed at Vembakottai

VIRUDHUNAGAR:  A dice made of elephant ivory and a decorated shell bangle were unearthed during the phase 2 excavation at Vembakottai on Tuesday. The current phase of excavation commenced on April 6. Around six trenches were dug and nearly 900 artifacts, including copper coins, iron objects, weighing machines, and terracotta figurines have been unearthed so far.

On Tuesday, the team found an elephant ivory dice measuring 3.9cm by 1.4cm, weighing  191mg. In the last phase of excavation, dice made of terracotta was unearthed. An exhibition stall was also set up at the excavation site recently and artifacts will be put on display on all days this month. The district administration has also arranged free bus service from Vembakottai to the excavation site for tourists.
