Woman claims hubby died after consuming hooch

A construction worker, Kumaresan (46) from Asanampattu near Odukathur, died after allegedly consuming illicit liquor on Monday evening.

VELLORE:  A construction worker, Kumaresan (46) from Asanampattu near Odukathur, died after allegedly consuming illicit liquor on Monday evening. The incident came to light when his wife, Sentamarai (45), filed a complaint with Vepanguppam police. She claimed Kumaresan succumbed to the after-effects of consuming hooch and urged the authorities to take action against those involved in its trade.

However, Vellore deputy superintendent of police Thirunavukarasu, who visited the scene on Tuesday, said the ongoing crackdown on illicit liquor in the district has effectively curtailed its availability and it is highly unlikely that Kumaresan consumed illicit alcohol. Moreover, it was revealed that the labourer had a pre-existing condition of epilepsy and had not eaten since Monday morning. Considering the scorching heat during the day, it is plausible that Kumaresan died of these reasons. We are awaiting the postmortem report for further action, he said.

Speaking to the media persons, Senthamarai said, “Why should I lie that my husband died after consuming illicit alcohol? He had mortgaged even my thali to drink. I am a daily wage labourer with three children. Now that my husband is no more, I don’t know what to do. The government should take appropriate action so that others won’t have to suffer like me.”

The body of the deceased has been transferred to the government hospital in Adukkamparai for a postmortem. The results are expected to be out in two days, said sources.
