Delay in hospital repair work, Dharmapuri MLA livid

Dharmapuri Medical College Hospital is an important health care facility in the district which records footfall of over 800 outpatients everyday.

DHARMAPURI: Citing inconvenience caused to patients, Dharmapuri MLA SP Venkateshwaran condemned the management of the Dharmapuri Medical College Hospital for closing the obstetrics and gynaecology ward but not carrying out repair works.

Dharmapuri Medical College Hospital is an important healthcare facility in the district which records footfall of over 800 outpatients every day. Recently, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology building was closed for renovation. MLA Venkateshwaran told TNIE that he inspected the ward on Monday and found that no repair and renovation works were underway.

“Last week I went to the DMCH to enquire about the well-being of patients after a bus accident left 25 people injured. During the visit, I was informed that the building housing the obstetrics and gynaecology ward had become severely dilapidated and after inspection requested the hospital administration to undertake renovations,” he said.

“During the District Development Coordination And Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting on Monday, the issue was brought up. The hospital administration told us that the renovation had been completed. I visited the hospital that evening and found that the ward remained closed and no renovation had been carried out. Around 100 patients, had been shifted to other wards.” Venkateshwaran said,

“Under the National Health Mission, over Rs 2 crore had been provided. Instead of using these funds to undertake the renovation. They had appealed to the PWD (Buildings) for renovation. This could take nearly six months for the approval, sanction, and issuing tender.

The patients coming to DMCH are already suffering from a space shortage and closing a ward for a long period would be a huge inconvenience.” Sources in the Dharmapuri Medical College Hospital said, "The renovation would be completed soon and there is no shortage of beds in the hospital."
