Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convict Murugan acquitted in Vellore jail case

VELLORE:  The Vellore district judicial arbitration court acquitted two persons, including Murugan, one of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, in a case related to obstructing a woman guard at the Vellore central jail from performing her duties.

Murugan, who had been in jail for over 30 years in connection with the assassination case, was released on November 12, 2022, following a Supreme Court direction. However, being a Sri Lankan national and owing to cases pending against him, Murugan was detained at the special camp in Tiruchy.

The central prisons department meanwhile filed a complaint with the Bagayam police against Murugan and another inmate, Gabriel, for allegedly hindering a woman guard from performing her duty during an inspection at their cell in Vellore central jail in 2020.

Murugan had represented himself in the case and the verdict was pronounced on Friday. Amid tight security, He was brought to the Vellore judicial magistrate court from the special camp. Judge Roshkala acquitted Murugan and Gabriel of the charges. Murugan was later sent back to the camp.
