COIMBATORE: Coimbatore Superintendent of Police K Karthikeyan on Thursday said that stolen and lost mobile phones worth approximately `48 lakh were returned to their rightful owner.
During the event of handing over 252 mobile phones worth around Rs 48.36 lakh at the District police office, Karthikeyan said that the police are actively raising awareness about mobile phone theft, as it is considered a form of data theft. So far this year, 750 stolen phones have been recovered and returned to their owners.
He also said that some thefts are spontaneous, while others are planned and executed by specific gangs. The police are currently investigating these gangs and strict action will be taken after that.
Additionally, he noted that out of 65 Dhabas (roadside restaurants) in Coimbatore, 41 were raided recently and 11 were found selling illegal liquor. A total of 250 litres of liquor was seized. He also recommended that the district collector should seal the Dhabas that sell illegal liquor.
Some Dhabas operate under the guise of family restaurants and offer alcohol illegally while availing dining facilities.
Highlighting that anti-drug operations were carried out mainly in areas where college students are staying in large numbers, especially in the subdivisions of Karumathampatti, Perur, and Madukkarai, he said these efforts have resulted in a positive impact, leading to a decrease in drug circulation.”
The police are also gathering information from people caught with drugs and contraband regarding their sources and suppliers. Over the past 20 days, operations against drugs and contraband have intensified resulting in the sealing of 176 retail outlets and the seizure of around 350 kg of banned tobacco products, including 150 kg of ‘Cool Lip’.
In addition to these actions, Karthikeyan said that Anti-Drug Clubs have been established in educational institutions to raise awareness about the consequences of drug abuse among students.
