CHENNAI: A violent clash broke out between two rival gangs — both tied to the 2017 murder of a history-sheeter — in broad daylight near Parry’s Corner, just a short distance from the North Beach police station on Monday. Seven people have been arrested in connection with the incident, police said.
According to the police, seven suspects in the murder of history-sheeter Jeeva appeared before the fast-track court inside the Singaravelar Complex in George Town on Monday. After the hearing was adjourned to November 26, the group left the complex. Since two of the suspects hailed from Villupuram, the group was en route to the Beach Station to drop them off for a train to Kilambakkam.
“As they reached the station on three bikes, they saw a group of associates of Jeeva charging towards them and fled the spot. As the group stopped at a signal near Parry’s Corner, the other gang surrounded them. A clash ensued and both groups sustained injuries as they attacked each other with knives,” a police officer said.
Hearing the commotion, personnel from the North Beach police station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
H Akash (24), G Karthick (28), his brother G Prabhakaran (31), and A ‘Logu’ alias Logesh (30) were remanded in custody, while the remaining three were admitted to a government hospital.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, in a post X, said, “it is shocking that knife-wielding gangs are openly clashing near government offices. I urge the government to take immediate action to curb rampant violence.”
