TIRUNELVELI: A special sub-inspector and a constable attached to the Thalaiyuthu police station were suspended on Wednesday for allegedly threatening a quarry operator to supply 110 tonnes of m-sand free of cost for house construction.
According to sources, the two police personnel — SSI Ramanathan and constable Balasubramanian — had approached Sundararajan, who runs a quarry and crusher unit at Palamadai under the Seevalaperi police limits, allegedly demanding free m-sand, claiming they were from the Thalaiyuthu police station.
When the owner denied, saying that the quarry products had been leased to a Kerala-based firm, the two allegedly threatened him. Sources claimed that the owner initially agreed to supply 10 tonnes, but the personnel demanded 110 tonnes to be loaded in three tipper lorries, and issued threats to him over the phone.
Following this, Sundararajan submitted a complaint to Superintendent of Police V Prassannakumar, who ordered an inquiry. Based on the preliminary findings, the two were placed under suspension on Wednesday.
