

TIRUCHY: Income Tax officials and election officials on Thursday night seized Rs 50 lakh unaccounted cash from the residence of a man in Malavanur village in Tiruchy district.
The man was identified as A Neelamegam (65), a resident of Malavanur. Official sources said Neelamegam is a relative of TVK candidate for Lalgudi assembly constituency, Ku Pa Krishnan. Krishnan, a former AIADMK minister, joined TVK a few months back.
According to sources, on Thursday night, the election flying squad received confidential information about large sums of cash being hoarded at Neelamegam's residence.
The matter was routed through the election control room, following which the Election Department alerted the Income Tax Department.
Acting on the tip-off, officials led by ITO Kathiravan, along with personnel from the election flying squad and the static surveillance team headed by Lalgudi RDO and Returning Officer K Srithar, conducted a search on the premises.
During the search, authorities recovered Rs 50 lakh in cash, which was found to be unaccounted. The raid was carried out in the presence of the election officials during the operation.
The Income Tax Department has initiated a detailed investigation into the source of the cash and its possible links to the ongoing elections.
