CHENNAI: More than six months after one-km stretch of road was dug up for laying an underground sewer pipeline, the Kundrathur panchayat union has sought Rs 90.42 lakh from Metro Water to undertake repair works.
In a reply to a petition filed by resident S Ganesh, the panchayat union said Metro Water had dug up 810 metres of Oil Mill Road in Iyyappanthangal and 312 metres of RR Nagar Main Road in Paraniputhur to transfer sewage from the VGN Highness Apartment.
The local body said it has prepared an estimate of Rs 90.42 lakh for road restoration and forwarded it to Metro Water. Repair work will begin after the funds are released, the letter said.
Activist P Senthil Kumar said Metro Water began the work in March and the roads have remained in poor condition ever since. “Commuting has become difficult, especially during rain. Metro Water should release the funds immediately,” he said.
An official said the funds would be released after obtaining approval from the board.
Meanwhile, residents said laying the underground sewer pipeline has not solved the area’s sewage problems. They alleged that several high-rise apartment buildings continue to discharge untreated sewage into stormwater drains. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board issued show cause notices to such apartment buildings but the issue continues due to lack of follow-up action, alleged Senthil Kumar.
