

PUDUKKOTTAI: An 11-year-old boy drowned in a stagnant pool near a leaking drinking water pipeline at Meboothakudi junction near Viralimalai on Monday. The deceased was identified as M Magadeep of Kalappanur. a Class 6 student.
Police said Magadeep accompanied his father Muthazhagu to a house construction site near Meboothakudi junction on the Viralimalai-Inamkulathur road on Sunday evening.
After his father left, he allegedly entered the water that had accumulated in an open area to bathe. He drowned after his foot allegedly got stuck in the slush.
As he did not return home, his family kept searching for him throughout the night. On Monday morning, passersby noticed the body and informed police. Viralimalai sent the body to Manapparai Government Hospital for postmortem.
Sources said the water accumulated in the area following a leak in a pipeline of the Cauvery Combined Water Supply Scheme, which carries water from Tiruchy to Pudukkottai.
Pudukkottai MLA V Muthuraja raised the issue through a calling-attention motion in the Assembly on Monday. Sources in the Pudukkottai district administration said the issue was being examined and appropriate action would be taken.
