MADURAI: The Madurai Corporation Council has approved the transfer of 86 cents of civic body land near Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) to facilitate the establishment of an Integrated Regional Cancer Centre and Critical Care Centre.
The land, located in Ward 10 of Madurai North taluk, comprises around 37,458 sq ft spread across several town survey numbers. The property was originally part of the corporation-owned Anna Bus Stand site.
The district administration had sought a no-objection certificate from the corporation for transferring the land to GRH. During the process, the civic body pointed out that corporation land had earlier been transferred to the hospital and that an audit objection required such transfers to be accounted for at prevailing market value.
Accordingly, the value of the land proposed for transfer has been assessed at around Rs 86.74 crore. The corporation proposed adjusting this amount against its outstanding loan liability to the government under the ADP, KfW and JnNURM schemes.
A government order issued by the Health and Family Welfare Department on August 5 directed the district administration and corporation commissioner to take steps to transfer the land to GRH after adjusting its value against the corporation’s outstanding dues.
With the council now approving the proposal, the corporation will proceed with the necessary steps for transferring the land to GRH.
