MADURAI: The VCK held protests on Monday following an attack on a party functionary and a cadre allegedly by caste Hindus in two separate incidents in Madurai district on Sunday night.

VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan condemned the incidents and demanded that all those involved in both incidents be arrested and detained under preventive detention laws. He also sought compensation for the victims under the SC/ST Act. It is suspected the attacks were due to previous enmity.

The first incident occurred near Melur on Sunday night when a 27-year-old Scheduled Caste person, C Selvam of Melavalavu, was attacked with sickles by two caste Hindus, K Prakash (20) and P Nithishkumar (19). The police registered a case and arrested the two assailants.

In another incident at Ambedkar Nagar near Sellur, a 27-year-old R Alagar was attacked with sickle by Kannan on Sunday night. He suffered a serious head injury and was admitted to the same hospital, Thirumavalavan said. Kannan is absconding. Further inquiry is on.
