

CHENNAI: The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) has appointed SB Selvakumaran as station director of Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) at Kalpakkam from July 1. The appointment follows the retirement of M Seshaiah.
Selvakumaran previously served as chief superintendent of the twin-reactor facility. A mechanical engineering graduate from the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli, he joined NPCIL in 1989 as part of its first in-plant training batch. In a career spanning more than 36 years, he has worked across reactor commissioning, plant operations, maintenance and life-extension programmes. He was closely involved in the large-scale replacement of coolant channels in MAPS Unit 2 during 2002-03.
Selvakumaran also played a key operational role during the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, when tsunami waves struck the Kalpakkam coast.
