HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh government on Monday opposed the plea of the Telangana government before the Supreme Court seeking to extend the date of admissions in professional courses till October 31.

When the case came up for hearing before a two-member bench headed by justice Sudhansu Jyoti Mukhopadhaya, the counsel representing the AP government contended that the extension of date for admissions would have an adverse effect on thousands of students belonging to both the states.

As per Section 95 of the AP Reorganisation Act, the admissions and reservation quotas in education sector have to be continued for a period of 10 years in both the states and neither the AP nor Telangana cannot change the existing pattern on their own, the counsel said.

He argued that the admissions have to go on considering both the states as a single unit in accordance with the original schedule.

On the other hand, the counsel representing Telangana government contended that the Telangana being a new state has been facing a huge staff crunch and it would be very difficult for it to complete the admissions with the skeleton staff.

The bench directed the counsels for AP and the All India Council for Technical Education to file their counter affidavits and adjourned the case to August 4.
