HYDERABAD: Henceforth, vehicle registration certificates (RC) issued by the Transport department will bear the photograph of the owner. Transport minister P Mahender Reddy launched the new feature at a function held at Regional Transport Authority office in Khairatabad Tuesday.

“The decision to include photograph will enhance transparency and safety and it will be helpful to identify the owner easily in case of accidents, sale or theft of the vehicle,” said Mahender Reddy after launching the feature.

The new feature has been made possible with the available infrastructure and staff and will not incur any additional expenditure to the Transport department or vehicle owners, the minister added.

There are about 1.17 crore vehicles belonging to various classes in Telangana state and though the owners of these vehicles need not apply for a fresh RC, when they sell the vehicle, the new owner will get a RC with photograph included.

The Transport minister also launched a mobile app to check the details of school buses like owner’s name, driver’s name, fitness certificate, among others, which will be made available on department’s website soon.

Dept Nets Rs 8,000 Crore Revenue

The Transport department managed to earn a revenue of Rs 8,000 crore in the first quarter of 2015-16 financial year while the target for the year is Rs 24,000 crore. Mahender Reddy reviewed the progress in revenue collection and the new initiatives introduced by the department. He urged the officials to step up efforts to increase the revenue. “There is a shortage of staff in Transport department and many check posts also do not have sufficient staff. We will make efforts to increase the staff strength and also focus on increasing revenue,” he stated.
