HYDERABAD: The Telangana Joint Action Committee, which met with its chairman M.Kodandaram in the chair here on Tuesday, decided to do everything it can to stop suicides by farmers.

Speaking to mediapersons later, Kodandaram asked poets to write poems and songs that would instil confidence in farmers and dissuade them from committing suicide. “We  will do all we can to stop farmers’ suicides,” he declared.

Kodandaram said TJAC would meet again to decide its future course of action with respect to farmers’ issues.

The TJAC was of the opinion that of the 154 suicides that took place in September, 93 were due to withering of standing crops.

On jobs, Kodandaram said priority should be given to locals in recruitment to jobs in Telangana by the Railway Selection Board. “Only two states are getting a chunk of jobs in the railways,” he observed and said they would take up the issue with the MPs from the state.

Refusing to intervene in the differences between political parties, Kodandaram said that they were hoping that a new trend of politics would emerge in the new state of Telangana.

“Defecting from one party to another will lead to political imbalance,” he said and added that it was not advisable for any party to encourage defections.
