ITDA Efforts Bring Down Mother, Child Mortality Rate in Adilabad

‘Avval’ project aims at achieving 100 pc institutional deliveries in tribal areas

ADILABAD: Thanks to sustained efforts of the  Integrated Tribal development Agency (ITDA), Utnoor, both the infant mortality rate (IMR) and  maternal mortality rate (MMR) have come down considerably in the tribal areas in the district.

The turnaround is the result of implementation of the ‘Avval’ (meaning mother in Gondi language) project launched in February 2014 to reduce the IMR and MMR through increase of institutional deliveries.

According to officials, the mortality rate of child and mother was very high in the district before the implementation of the Avval. While the IMR  was  56 for every 1,000 babies,  the MMR was 222 for every one lakh deliveries in 2013. With the implementation of the Avval, the IMR has come down to 20 and the MMR has dropped down to 200 in 2014.

As a part of the Avval project, the ITDA encourages the tribals to go for institutional deliveries at the hospitals.

As a part of this, officials track every case of pregnancy in the tribal mandals and ambulance facility is provided for pregnant women. Due to these efforts, home deliveries have come down to 791 in 2014-15 from 1,768 in 2013-14.  The project aims at achieving 100 per cent institutional deliveries in tribal mandals and ensure that the IMR drops to below 10 per cent by 2018.

While the total deliveries reordered from February to October this year in 13 mandals are 4,883, the  institutional deliveries account for 3,983 and home deliveries stand at 906.

In terms of percentage, the institutional deliveries are  81.4 and home deliveries are 18.6.

According to sources, the project is being implemented in 20 primary health centres (PHC) in 13 mandals covering a population of 5 lakh.

The mandals are: Indervelly, Narnoor, Jainoor, Sirpur (U), Kerameri, Wankidi, Asifabad, Tamsi, Sirpur (T),  Koutala, Bejjur, Tiryani and Vemanpally.

Kerameri PHC has topped by registering 106 deliveries followed by Indervelly with 105 deliveries. Speaking to Express, ITDA Project Officer, R.V Karnan, said the main aim of this project was tracking and counselling the  pregnant women and their families to go for   institutional delivery so as to reduce  both the IMR and MMR.
