ADILABAD: The officials of the Saakshar Bharat Mission are making all efforts to educate nearly 51,960 illiterates under the 4th phase of Mission, which had commenced recently in the district. Though the 4th phase of the Mission commenced on January 26, the classes at the Adult education centres began in the last week of February.
The Saakshar Bharat Mission is aimed at providing education to those adults, who have lost the opportunity and have crossed the age of formal education, but now feel a need for learning of any type, including literacy, basic education, skill development and equivalency.
According to Adult Education deputy director and member secretary of Zilla Lok Shiksha Samithi, T Veerashyam said that training classes for the village coordinators also known as preraks had been conducted from February 24 to 27.
He also said that the government was supplying 1,600 books for each mandal for the benefit of those attending the classes at the adult education centres.
The classes are conducted for four hours a day- two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening. A total of 866 adult education centres were launched one each in 866 villages in 2011 in the district under the Saakshar Bharat Mission.
While two preraks are working at each centre, one coordinator is working at the mandal level to monitor the functioning of the centres in 52 mandals. The district’s average literacy rate is 61.55 per cent.
While Bellampalli with 73.39 per cent literacy rate stood at the top, the Bheemini mandal with 44.86 per cent stood at the bottom. Officials said that they had made 2.41 lakh people as literates through the Saakshar Bharat Mission in the past three phases.
“Though the persons attending the adult education centres are supposed to appear for the learners assessment test under Saakshar Bharat Mission on March 15, it seems the exam for them may be conducted later as the classes commenced late,” said an official.
