SHADNAGAR:Gun shots reverberated in the otherwise quiet locality beside the Shadnagar-Kothur highway, Millenium Township.

Monday morning brought a rude shock for the residents of the township located around a kilometre from Shadnagar Town. Residents woke up to the noise of gunshots as almost 17 rounds were shot, officially.

The residents, who were instructed to stay indoors, were clueless until reports of a suspected militant being shot dead in an encounter started pouring in on news channels. Slowly, people started coming out onto the streets to find out that local police had already cordoned off the entire perimeter.

As things cleared out, the residents realised it was gangster, ex-naxalite, extortionist and fugitive Md Nayeemuddin who was shot dead in a police encounter. His body was found lying under a tree next to the Shadnagar municipal memorial park in the township. The body bore bullet injuries in the lower chest and one around his hips. A gold chain, golden-strapped watch, gold rings were intact on the body.

An AK-47 assault rifle and a 9mm glock pistol, allegedly belonging to him, was also found at the scene. The window pane of the driver’s side of the white coloured Ford Endeavor, in which Nayeem was allegedly travelling, was shattered. The driver of the car could be nabbed only late in the evening.

The Vehicle: The Ford Endeavor bearing number AP 28 DR 5859, as per AP transport department website, belongs to Vadepalli Narsing Rao, a YSR congress party leader from Kukatpally. Inside the car, a lunch basket was the only thing found, apart from a few `10 notes and the pistol.

Fortified house: The two storied house - a tenement almost like a fortress with huge compound walls and iron-sheeted gate, ensured no one knew what went on inside the house. Neighbours too, upon asking, said they had no information about the residents. On entering the premises, on Monday, paper plates with biriyani on it were found strewn around near the main door. A few tea cups and disposable plastic glasses, water bottles found there indicated that quite a few persons were present.

Two cars found parked: A Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire bearing number AP 28 CD 0004, registered on the name of one Vasanth Kumar Mannam, and a Honda Amaze bearing number AP 28 DX 3558, registered on the name of Sri Hari Rao Uppalapati was also found on the premises apart from a TVS Scooty pep+.

Cops’ version: When asked how the event unfolded, a police officer said the incident happened between 8 and 9 am. “Inspector and his guards were waiting outside the house when Nayeem’s car approached. On seeing the cops, the driver opened fire and fled the spot. Nayeem came out from the right side and opened fire.
