HYDERABAD: THE TRS government gave a silent burial to Bangaru Talli, a scheme launched for promoting the socio-economic development of girl child.

The government on Friday repealed Bangaru Talli Girl Child Promotion and Empowerment Act, 2013. The Act was introduced by the then N Kiran Kumar Reddy government in combined AP. With the introduction of Kalayana Lakshmi scheme, the state government repealed Bangaru Talli.

However, there is no clarity on how many applied between May 2013 to June 2014 under Bangaru Talli. Whether the government issued bonds or not and the exact number of beneficiaries registered were not available immediately.

‘’SERP and other agencies registered the names of the beneficiaries under Bangaru Talli. We have to verify the exact numbers. We are not taking any applications under Bangaru Talli from June 2,” a top official of Women and Child Welfare department told Express on Friday.

The official, however, said those who registered their names between May 2013 and June 2014 would be given benefits. The state government can amend, modify and repeal any Act made in the combined AP within two years as per Section 101 of the AP Reorganisation Act. Accordingly, the government by issuing a GO repealed the Bangaru Thalli Act.

According to the GO issued on Friday, Bangaru Talli scheme, being a direct cash transfer programme and in the absence of effective mechanism to ensure that the cash given to parents is put to use for children to whom it is intended, the very objective of the programme is not being satisfactorily fulfilled.

Besides this, several other schemes like  free textbooks, free education, mid-day meals and scholarships are being implemented by the state government for the welfare of girl children.

In addition, the present government is implementing Arogya Lakshmi Programme, Kalyana Lakshmi/Shadi Mubarak Scheme for the marriage of girl children by investing crores of rupees.

“Owing to shortfalls in overseeing Bangaru Talli programme and and introduction of several other schemes for girl children in the state of Telangana, it has been felt that continuation of Bangaru Talli programme would not be required any more,’’ the orders said.
