Yadadri power plant: public hearing today

Heavy police bandobust in place to tackle any opposition or protests.

NALGONDA: :In a move that would accelerate the pace of Yadadri Thermal Power Plant works at Veerlapalem village of Damaracharla mandal, the TS Pollution Control Board would conduct a public hearing in Veerlapalem and nearby villages on Tuesday to get opinion on setting up of the project at the proposed site.

The project is designed to generate 4,000 Mega Watts power from five units.

The setting up of the power plant in Damaracherla initially evoked opposition from locals. However, the government subsided the opposition by offering decent compensation for lands that the oustees would lose, sources said.

The district administration is making elaborate arrangements at the proposed site for Tuesday's hearing and a heavy police bandobust will also be in place to tackle any opposition or protests, sources said.

Meanwhile, Miryalaguda MLA Bhasker Rao and Nalgonda MP Gutha Sukhendar Reddy (both Congress) are said to be supportig the setting up of the power plant as it would contribute to development of the region as well as create jobs.

The CPM, however, is demanding that the government fulfil its assurances given to tribals of the area during land acquisition before the public hearing.

Human rights activists too are asking the government to fulfil their promise of adequate compensation to the land oustees.

G Mohan, a human rights activist, alleged that the government was trying to curtail the voice of tribals by resorting to arrests and going ahead with public hearing under police surveillance.
