Telangana State to provide Godavari water to 40 lakh acres

The state government has drawn up plans to provide Godavari waters to 40 lakh acres from next agriculture year.

HYDERABAD: The state government has drawn up plans to provide Godavari waters to 40 lakh acres from next agriculture year.Godavari water would be supplied to 16 lakh acres from SRSP and for another 24 lakh acre from various other projects. The Kaleshwaram lift irrigation scheme would also come into operation partially from next year.

At a review on irrigation projects on Monday, chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao instructed the officials to keep the canals under SRSP ready to enable supply of water to entire ayacut by next year.
Canals in the 346 km stretch from SRSP to Nadigudem will be readied for supply of Godavari water from next year. “Godavari waters should be supplied for 16 lakh acres under SRSP and 8.5 lakh acres under LMD water for two crops and all the tanks under these projects should be filled up,” Rao said. He directed the officials concerned to study the viability of turning tanks in Palakurthi, Station Ghanpur, Dornakal, and Tungaturthy Assembly constituencies into reservoirs and prepare the estimates.

“Water will be lifted from Medigadda from next June and from there it will reach Mid Maner and SRSP. From there water should reach Karimnagar, Warangal and Nalgonda districts. There is 8.5 lakh acres ayucut below LMD, under SRSP but the canals system is not good. Canals should be there for the flow of 8,500 cusecs and the existing canals have the capacity for 6,000 cusecs. Increase the capacity of canals immediately,” the chief minister told the officials.
