HYDERABAD: A public interest litigation petition was filed in the Hyderabad High Court seeking re-investigation into the sensational rape and murder case of BPharmacy student Ayesha Meera at her hostel in Ibrahimpatnam near Vijayawada of Andhra Pradesh in the year 2007.
It may be recalled that on March 31 this year the High Court acquitted P Satyam Babu from the charges of murdering Ayesha Meera.
The court reprimanded the then investigating officers and directed the Andhra Pradesh government for initiation of disciplinary proceedings against those officers. The court allowed the appeal of Satyam Babu, who challenged the order of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Mahila Court in Vijayawada, Krishna district for convicting and sentencing him to life imprisonment in the case, and ordered for his immediate release.
Retired Osmania University professor Rama Melkote, journalist K Sajaya and activist V Sandhya Rani filed the PIL seeking court directions to the state authorities to send the erring officials who misled the case investigation before the government constituted Apex committee for necessary action.
They pointed out that the government has so far not taken any steps to order for case re-investigation even after acquittal of Satyam Babu. Escape of the murderers not only causes injustice to the victim alone, but an injustice to those women who have confidence on the system. They urged the court to issue directions to the authorities concerned to re-investigate the case by taking above aspects into consideration.
Principal secretary to home and director general of police of AP state were named as the respondents. The matter is expected to come up for hearing on Tuesday.
Action against officials sought
The PIL sought state authorities to send the erring officials who misled the investigation before the govt constituted Apex panel for necessary action.
