HYDERABAD: Expressing displeasure at failure of authorities of GHMC, HMDA, HMWSSB and PCB in exercising their powers to take action against those responsible for discharge of industrial wastage and effluents into various lakes in the city, a division bench of Hyderabad High Court on Wednesday directed them to file a comprehensive report informing about the steps taken to prevent lakes pollution.

Though steps have been taken for water treatment, what was its use if there was continuous flow of effluents into lakes? The present situation would not have arisen if the official machinery discharged its duties without bowing to political and other pressures.

The situation would improve if action was taken against the violators, the bench told the authorities.
The bench comprising Chief Justice TBN Radhakrishnan and Justice SV Bhatt was passing this order in batch petitions filed by social activist Lubna Sarwath and others seeking direction to the State government to take steps for protection of Malkam cheruvu (lake) situated at Raidurg village in Serilingampally mandal of Rangareddy district from encroachments.

A petition was also filed by IPS officer and local resident Anjana Sinha seeking directions to the respondent authorities to take steps to rejuvenate and revitalise the aforesaid lake to retain its originality.
