HYDERABAD: Is Telangana headed for another politically charged Assembly byelection?
If the political grapevine is to be believed, Telangana could be inching towards another high-stakes electoral battle, with one sitting MLA holding the key. While speculation over his switch to the BJP has gathered pace, the legislator appears to be keeping everyone guessing, delaying what party sources describe as an almost-final political realignment.
According to BJP sources, the induction of the MLA, along with two former legislators, is virtually final. However, the party’s long-standing position that any sitting legislator joining its ranks must first resign and seek a fresh mandate has emerged as the principal hurdle. The uncertainty over whether the MLA is willing to face a byelection has set tongues wagging across political circles, even as leaders in his present party make a last-ditch effort to persuade him to stay.
For the BJP, a byelection ahead of the expected Greater Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri municipal corporation elections would provide an opportunity to showcase its strength in the urban belt and build momentum before the next Assembly elections. Senior leaders, including Telangana BJP in-charge Abhay Patil, are understood to be overseeing a strategy to induct leaders from rival parties in phases and convert those defections into electoral gains.
Party leaders point to the victories in the Dubbak and Huzurabad byelections as the template they hope to replicate. For the BJP, those victories remain proof that a well-fought byelection can alter the political narrative far beyond a single constituency.
The calculations extend well beyond a single Assembly seat. Alongside preparations for the municipal corporation elections expected later this year, the party is also keeping a close watch on the proposed delimitation exercise, which leaders believe could reshape the electoral landscape in and around Hyderabad.

According to BJP sources, the party is drawing confidence from its victories in the Secunderabad, Malkajgiri, Chevella and Medak Lok Sabha constituencies, arguing that the electoral trend has shifted in its favour across several urban segments. Even if the party falls short in a byelection, leaders believe a strong showing would help keep the political pot boiling ahead of the Assembly elections.
Behind the scenes, however, the proposed induction is said to involve more than a simple change of party colours. Sources claim the MLA has sought political accommodation for members of his family, including one Parliament seat and two Assembly seats.
While no final assurance has reportedly been given, discussions with the party’s central leadership are said to be moving in a positive direction.
Leaders in the MLA’s present party, meanwhile, are pulling out all the stops to prevent his exit, arguing that his family has already received adequate political representation. Party insiders say the legislator is dealing with internal political differences as well as business-related concerns, both of which are believed to be weighing on his decision.
According to BJP sources, the MLA is expected to meet senior state and national leaders during or soon after the ongoing Parliament session. If those discussions conclude favourably, the party is likely to ask him to resign from the Assembly and seek a fresh mandate before the municipal elections.
The rumour mill gathered pace following reports that the MLA had also met the chief minister of a BJP-ruled state to discuss his political future, including the possibility of joining the saffron party. The reported meeting has added to the buzz within political circles, even as senior BJP leaders continue consultations with Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Malkajgiri MP Eatala Rajender and Nizamabad MP Dharmapuri Arvind.
Political observers believe the BJP’s recent efforts to put its own house in order indicate that the central leadership is preparing for a more concerted push in Telangana. For now, however, the political ball remains firmly in one MLA’s court. Should he decide to resign, it could well trigger a contest that both the BJP and its rivals would view as far more than just another byelection.
