HYDERABAD: Malkajgiri police are likely to arrest at least three more suspects by the weekend in connection with the Bollarum military armoury theft case, a source familiar with the investigation told TNIE.

The arrests are expected to follow the 10-day custodial questioning of accused Upputholla Mallesh, 37, which investigators said helped them identify others allegedly linked to the case.

Mallesh was questioned in police custody from September 22 to October 1 and was sent to Chanchalguda Central Jail on Thursday.

During the questioning, investigators sought to establish his motive, whether he intended to sell the stolen arms and ammunition, and whether he had received help from others.

Grudge reason for ammo theft

Mallesh reportedly told investigators that he had served in the regiment for nearly 16 years before being removed from service over health and disciplinary issues. He allegedly said he held a grudge against his superiors and stole ammunition from the armoury. Police also questioned him about why he had repeatedly moved the stolen ammunition.

An official said the questioning of Mallesh and other suspects during the 10-day custody period helped investigators identify additional persons allegedly linked to the theft.
