A 46-year-old woman died after a tree fell on her at the state-run SSKM Hospital cum Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGME&R), eastern India’s premier government medical research and healthcare facility in Bhabanipur.
The deceased individual has been identified as Rahida Bibi, a resident of Nalhati in Birbhum district.
Rashida, along with her relative Aklima Bibi, was sitting on a bench in front of the urology OPD clinic inside the SSKM Hospital complex. Both Rashida and Aklima were taken to the trauma care unit on the hospital premises.
Doctors declared Rashida dead, and the injured Aklima is undergoing treatment in serious condition.
According to the hospital sources, Rashida had brought Aklima from Nalhati for the latter’s treatment in the urology department.
Rashida's body has been sent for post-mortem examination. "The circumstances leading to the tree fall are being looked into," sources said.
A preliminary investigation has been initiated.
In a separate incident, a student of class I of Mitra Institution in the Bhabanipur area in the southern part of Kolkata was admitted to the SSKM Hospital after being bitten by a snake inside the school complex during the tiffin break around 8.30 am today.
Without any delay, the school authorities informed the parents of the student, Dripto Pal, a resident of the Tollygunj area.
Dripto was rushed to the SSKM Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. Dripto’s mother said that his condition is stable. His blood sample has been sent to the hospital laboratory to confirm the presence of snake venom.
The Mitra Institution is a prominent school in the Chief Minister’s Bhabanipur assembly constituency. The former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is a voter of the Mitra Institution polling booth.
The school authorities have informed the state forest department to trace the snake inside the complex.
Last week, a class III student of a premier private school along the EM Bypass was also bitten by a snake inside the toilet of the institute.
