WARANGAL: Good news for the citizens of Warangal that they need not worry about availability of drinking water this summer as there would be enough water to quench their thirst.
The officials of the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) are claiming that there is sufficient water to meet the requirements of the city till May. The city has a population of about 10 lakh and about 5 mcft (million cubic feet) water is needed per day to meet the drinking water requirements.
The GWMC officials claim that all the three summer storage tanks — Dharmasagar, Bhadrakali and Waddepally, have enough water to take care of the drinking water supply needs of the city for the next three months. Bhadrakali tank has a capacity of 150 mcft, Waddepally full tank capacity is 135 mcft and Dharmasagar has 800 mcft full tank level. Currently the summer storage tanks receive water supplies from SRSP and Devadula projects and the same is supplied through 940 km stretch of distribution network.
GWMC in-charge SE N Bhikshapathi told Express that precautionary measures are being taken by GWMC to tackle the water crisis.
It will be supplying water through 54 tankers in GWMC limits, he said. With the GWMC getting `544 crore under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) scheme for supplying drinking water to 42 merged villages, the officials are optimistic that there will not be much problem this season.
However, despite GWMC’s tall claims of having sufficient water for summer, citizens are not convinced as they are getting water on alternate days and in some areas once in a week. “Every year the corporation makes tall claims but fail to supply water to citizens,” a resident said.
