Shobana Udayasankar is truly class apart.

Specialising in Mysore traditional school of art, her approach is to capture the traditional, mythological subjects and events that are the mainstay of Mysore Art through rare, technically authentic depictions.

Keeping in mind the above, she brings forth her solo exhibition titled, ‘The Royal Art: A Showcase of Mysore Paintings’ in the city from August 26 to August 31 at the Arpana Caur Gallery.

‘‘My portfolio of works evidences an intelligent mix of innovation and tradition and is deeply rooted in a mix of passion, technical expertise and creativity,’’ she says.

This way, Shobana’s work will appeal to purists seeking the preservation of a precise, traditional art form in all its complexity, as well as to contemporary audiences who are eager to find novel representations and intricate compositions without compromise.

The artworks in the collection are based on tales and events occurring in various scriptural and mythological texts, including the Puranas.

Also featured are depictions of gods and goddesses, following symbolisms and descriptions.

All in all, the collection presents new compositions that remain true to their original techniques and methods, along with focusing on traditional representations.

‘I am eager to see the reactions now as I am confident many will relate to the collection and gain inspiration for their works.

To see that happen will be truly amazing,’’ says Shobana.
