New Delhi: As many as 162 Congress MPs and 55 former UPA ministers have received eviction notices to vacate their bungalows in Lutyens’ Delhi to make way for ministers in the Narendra Modi government. But among the prominent names are many who already have homes in Delhi.
For instance, Farooq Abdullah, being a veteran member of the Delhi social circuit, owns a place of his own in Central Delhi. His son-in-law, Sachin Pilot and his friend, the young Congress Turk Jiten Prasada had their bases in Delhi, even before they were allotted ministerial homes.
Successful entrepreneurs and farmer barons turned leaders like Pallam Raju, Jaipal Reddy and powerful royals like ex-culture minister Chandresh Kumari Katoch, the princess from Jodhpur—who owns a bungalow in Gurgaon—would be shuttling between Delhi and home. Former Home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has already quit his 2, Krishna Menon Marg bungalow after his defeat from Solapur Lok Sabha constituency, and is busy in Maharashtra politics. For ex-Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh, who has been staying at 12 Tughlaq Road for over a decade, the vacation order would be a bitter blow, for at Baghpat, he will need to spend lots of time reviving his image. Former External Affairs Minister and a successful lawyer before he donned his ministerial avatar Salman Khurshid, will be moving house from 4, Kushak Road. JP Agarwal, former Chairman of House Committee, Lok Sabha, said all ministers who lost the Lok Sabha polls will also have to vacate the house within a month as per the rules; however, former UPA Ministers who won the Lok Sabha polls or are still Rajya Sabha MPs would retain their designated bungalows. But not all leaders would be homeless in Delhi. “Senior Ministers who won the election like Moily, Kamalnath and KV Thomas will not be served notices and may retain their bungalow. Even former ministers who are Rajya Sabha MPs are entitled for type VII and VIII houses. The eviction notice is only for former ministers who lost. Even I have received the eviction notice,” Agarwal said ruefully, adding that senior MPs elected more than four times would be entitled to top category, type VII and VIII accommodation. Modi’s cabinet has 22 Cabinet Ministers, 10 MoS with Independent Charge and 12 MoSes. Since 320 MPs in 16th Lok Sabha have been elected for the first time, Lok Sabha secretariat will also have to arrange for their accommodation from house pool. “ For MPs we have set the June 19 deadline to vacate while former Ministers has been given time till June 27 to move out. We had a meeting with Secretary General of Lok Sabha on Friday to discuss the availability of accommodation,” A Directorate of Estate (DoE) official told The Sunday Standard.
