Marriage portals might soon have to carry a cautionary note, warning users against indulging in any activity other than seeking life partners and to make users aware of the need to exercise caution while surfing the sites.

“There have been many reports of people using such sites for dating and other purposes. It is to stop these that we are asking matrimonial sites to carry the cautionary note,” an official in the Women and Child Development Ministry told The Sunday Standard. Matrimonial websites have agreed and have asked for NASSCOM to be included in thrashing out the exact content of the disclaimer.

The government has decided to make it mandatory for people registering on matrimonial websites to disclose their Adhaar card numbers and any other personal identification.

The ministry has asked website owners to set up a dedicated helpline for redressal of complaints and filing periodical returns. The guidelines were formulated by an inter-ministerial panel, comprising officials from the Department of Information Technology, Home Affairs and the Women and Child Development Ministry, and three representatives from matrimonial websites.
