NEW DELHI:  The curtain goes up tomorrow on the second edition of The Sunday Standard Devi Awards in the capital, with 15 extraordinary women from across the country being honoured for their work. Union Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj will deliver the keynote address and present the awards to the women achievers, who are all game changers in their respective fields.

The Sunday Standard has instituted the awards to honour dynamic, innovative women who are changing the face of society through their work. The awardees are chosen by a jury of eminent women and senior editors of the newspaper, from a list of over 300 names.

The first set of awards was presented in New Delhi in December 2014 to 20 dynamic women drawn from across the country. The Devi awards have since been given to super-achievers from Andhra, Karnataka, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh, working in the fields of education, medicine, science, child welfare, the arts, sports, policing, and more.

Most of the awardees being honoured in the capital on Monday were born at a time when society expected a lot from the boys and very little from its girls. Yet, each one of the Devis took pains to figure out what she was good at and used that talent to improve not just her own lot, but also that of the people around her. She understood that the world around her could change only if she played a role in the transformation, and went about doing just that. The Sunday Standard salutes this spirit.
