Even as vegetables are being sold at high prices in the market, here is a vendor who sells them at just Rs 10 per ‘hidi’(a quantity that can be grabbed by two palms). M Ramachandrappa (72) has been in this old-fashioned business near the 100-Foot Road in Shivamogga, Karnataka, for the past nine years. Popularly known as ‘Ramanna’ or ‘Ajja’, this septuagenarian has been selling vegetables since 28 years. Earlier, he sold his produce at Gandhi Bazaar and used to charge `5 per ‘hidi’, but has now increased it to Rs 10. “We get more than quarter kg (250 gms) of tomatoes at just `10, when it is being sold at Rs 70 in the market. We are purchasing Ramanna’s vegetables since 25 years,” says Vinayak Kini, an old customer.
