It may sound fairly simple, but it’s quite the opposite when it comes to getting comedian Shimit Mathur off the stage once he steps up. Performing a stand-up set at Locale Cafe & Bar in the coming week,  he is capable of even executing a show for himself privately if nobody’s interested. That’s how crazy he is about comedy and making most things seem humorous. “I am a one-man idiot and I don’t feel shy in saying what I have to. Comedy is a great medium to do that openly,” he says.

In his circle, Mathur is known as the man who can crack a joke on anything, anytime. His strength is observing and he does that with an eagle eye. “Observation is my biggest tool. It helps me look at things carefully and then make jokes about it,” says Mathur, who doesn’t trust people with nasal hair. “There is a common habit among people, which is nose-drilling. They do it when they are alone, but they hate it when others do it or talk about. Nose-drilling is like sex; you do it in a close room but you are not allowed to talk about openly. I prefer and like people who drill their nose openly. What’s the big deal?” he laughs.

Clearly, he is unshamed by his peculiar preferences. As you speak to him, it becomes apparent that there is no filter when it comes to expressing himself. “That’s a good thing. Comedians are brutally honest and that’s what really helps our work,” says the self-confessed grumpy, drunken, cynical, pessimistic, and at times neurotic, misanthrope man, whose sole pursuit in life appears to be drinking, smoking, reading, and insulting people.

His content for this new show is based on human and mythological history. The human evolution amuses him and that’s why so many of his jokes surround this theme. His descriptions are graphic and thoughts flagrant but he doesn’t care being judged. He’s here to make you laugh, to make you ponder, and to make you wonder. That’s where his success lies.
