Outdated Delhi cops ready with 10-year tech plan

NEW DELHI: Still struggling to get initial-level clearances for next-generation Intelligent Traffic Management System, Delhi Police has prepared a vision plan for the next 10 years. To implement technological changes, the police say they’ll soon collaborate with technical institutions such as IITs, IIIT-Delhi and rope in technical experts.

Though Delhi Police failed to implement projects such as E-Beat Book and Know Your Police Station, it has proposed to Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal usage of next-level technology such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) in wearable devices. “Delhi Police has covered various aspects such as AI, Internet of Things, Crypto currencies and 3D printing in the presentation. The plan also explained implications of these developments by 2027 on policing activities,” an official communication says.

An officer said Delhi Police is planning to use outdated technology. “Turkish Police, Italy, the United Kingdom, etc have been using multi-platform training and crime detection modules, which are online based. But here we are at the planning stage of facilitating online learning for Delhi Police through an e-Academy,” a senior official said. Projects such as upgradation of Cyber Highway and ITMS were introduced nine years ago, but still not been implemented even partially.

Delhi Police has got an upgradation of the e-challan system, but it works on 2G internet speed. Vehicle-mounted dashboard cameras are still in the pipeline. “We should aim for cutting edge technologies and try to absorb technologies available all around us. To prepare for these projected changes, Delhi Police should have its own chief technical officer,” Baijal said.
