Remembering Mollywood’s first action hero

This year’s Jayan Ragamalika Award instituted by the city-based Jayan Kala Samskarika Vedi goes to Jagathy Sreekumar

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the late seventies, there were a number of films in which Jayan and Jagathy Sreekumar acted together. Now, 37 years after Malayalam filmdom’s first action hero died in a helicopter crash, the memory of that association is being rekindled.

Jagathy Sreekumar has been selected for this year’s Jayan Ragamalika Award instituted by the city-based Jayan Kala Samskarika Vedi. The award comprising Rs 15,000, citation and memento will be presented to Jagathy at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram on November 16, which marks the 37th death anniversary of Jayan.

“Jayan and Jagathy Sreekumar have acted in five or six films together, including ‘Etho Oru Swapnam’, and ‘Manushyamrigam’,’’ said G S Moni Krishna, secretary, Jayan Kala Samskarika Vedi. Jagathy has been selected for his valuable contributions to the film and television industries, he said.

Lyricist and chief patron of Jayan Kala Samskarika Vedi, Sreekumaran Thampi, will present the award to the actor.  Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran will inaugurate the ‘Jayan Smriti’ at the VJT Hall at 5.30 pm on the same day. The event will be followed by a music eve featuring songs from the films of Jayan and Jagathy Sreekumar.During his 11-year career in the movies, Jayan acted in more than 120 films, many of them big hits of the time.
