THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Wanna meet some future scientists? Pay a visit to the ‘Sasthramela 2017-18’ at St Mary’s HSS, Pattom, where hundreds of young talents have put their innovations on display.
Sasthramela, the Thiruvananthapuram revenue district science fair, which began on Wednesday is attracting large crowds, especially students. Around 800 students from lower primary to higher secondary are participating in the event organised by the Education Department. They hail from 12 education sub-districts in the region.
The show has been arranged in different categories namely science fair, social science fair, work experience fair, Maths fair and IT fair. Museum and Archaeology Minister Kadannappally Ramachandran inaugurated the event on Wednesday. Innovative exhibits at the show include a design for fuel production from human waste and a ‘wearable nano kidney’. Different types of waste management systems, some claiming zero pollution in processing, are other attractions.
A project by the Plus-II students of Government Model School stole the show. Titled ‘Energy Saving Chaayakkada’, is an innovative design of the boiler which will save water, energy and fuel.
Eight hundred students are participating in the social science fair while 775 are attending the Maths Fair. Students from 80 schools in Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts are participating in the Vocational Expo which began on Thursday.
The vocational expo is different from other shows since selected displays have been put up for sale. “Exhibits are products of the production-cum-training centre of the Vocational Higher Secondary Schools. Doing a commendable job
Student Police Cadets and National Cadet Corps members of St Mary’s HSS are controlling the traffic at the junction in front of the school. The volunteers won praise from motorists since the usual traffic snarl ups especially during the peak hours was absent. Nirmala, a parent, said the students are doing a commendable job. “Very often we hear complaints about the new generation lacking social responsibility. Acts like these disprove such arguments,” she said. Ninth standard students Goutham Krishna V and Sooraj S are leading the students police cadet and NCC cadet teams.
