THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A unique workshop on e-waste and e-waste management will be organised for school teachers. The mounting pile of e-waste and the lack of awareness among the public has prompted the Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA) to structure a workshop on e-waste management for the teachers.
“With the rate of discarded electronic waste increasing day by day, there is no proper disposal system being followed in our country. And this leads to an enormous amount of e-waste. Lack of awareness and information has been cited as the hurdle in developing a sound system for e-waste management,” the organisation has said in its statement.CISSA along with the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) and National Green Corps (NGC), Thiruvananthapuram, will hold the ICT based awareness and action workshop on e-waste. The workshop will be held on Saturday.
The thrust of the workshop will be on creating awareness on e-waste and e-waste management for school teachers. The pilot project will be run in 30 selected schools in the city corporation. “Most of the students and public are not aware of the health hazards due to improper handling of e-waste,” the organisation added. The workshop will start at 9:30 am and will be held at the seminar hall of CISSA.
The workshop will be inaugurated by K M Dharesan Unnithan, director, Energy Management Centre. Kamalakshan Kokkal, chief scientist and head, coastal and environment division, (KSCSTE) will deliver the keynote address.
Technical sessions will be handled by S S Nageshkumar, assistant manager and state nodal officer, E-waste, Clean Kerala Company Limited; G Pramod, consultant, E-waste Management; and Jayakrishnan K S, project manager, Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE).
