Parandur Airport Scrapped: Why Vijay Government Dropped Chennai’s Second Airport Plan

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has scrapped the proposed Parandur greenfield airport, fulfilling a key pre-election promise.

The decision follows years of protests by villagers and environmental groups, even as the project progressed through approvals and land acquisition.

The proposed airport was planned to handle up to 100 million passengers annually, with an estimated cost of Rs 27,000 crore. Nearly 1,700 acres had already been acquired before the project was dropped.

The move triggered a political storm, with the DMK calling it a setback for Tamil Nadu’s development.

The government will now identify an alternative site while expanding Chennai’s existing airport to meet growing demand.
