The Manipur High Court's recent directive to the state government to consider including the Meitei community in the ST category raised tensions in the state and sparked violent protests. The issue of the inclusion of the Meitei community in the ST list of the Constitution has been pending for nearly 10 years. The development has widened the old ethnic faultlines between the valley's Meitei community and the hill tribes.
