Pakistani lawmakers have elected a politician tainted by corruption allegations and failure to end the country's energy crisis as the country's prime minister.

Former minister for water and power Raja Pervaiz Ashraf won Friday's election in parliament with the support of the ruling Pakistan People's Party and its allies.

Ashraf is replacing Yousuf Raza Gilani, who was dismissed by the Supreme Court on Tuesday for refusing to initiate a corruption investigation against the president, who heads the PPP.

Judges are likely to make the same demand of Ashraf, and many predict he will quickly meet the same fate as Gilani.

Ashraf has been linked to alleged corruption in the commissioning of power plants and as minister for power was responsible for failing to fix chronic electricity shortages.
