BEIJING: A major fire ripped through an apartment in a high-rise building in the port city of Tianjin in northern China early today, claiming at least six lives and leaving five people wounded, state media reported.

The fire was reported from the apartment on the 38th floor of the City Tower located at the crossroads of Youyi Road and Pingjiang Street around 4 AM, it said.

Eleven people, who suffered injuries in the fire, were hospitalised. Six of them succumbed to the injuries, state-run People's Daily online reported.

The fire has been put out and the scene was being cleared, the report added.
