A 55-year-old Palestinian gynecologist from Ramallah remains in Israeli custody after suffering a heart attack following her arrest on August 18, according to Palestinian rights groups and media reports.
Dr Dima Mohammed Amin was detained during a pre-dawn raid on her home in Ramallah. Her family and lawyer were reportedly unable to determine her whereabouts for roughly 30 hours after her arrest.
While in custody, Amin suffered a cardiac emergency and was transferred to a hospital in Jerusalem, where she underwent cardiac catheterization before being returned to detention.
An Israeli military court subsequently extended her detention by five days. Israeli authorities reportedly allege that Amin’s arrest is linked to Facebook posts that they consider incitement or support for a hostile organization. The precise content of the posts has not been publicly detailed, and available reports do not indicate that she has been formally charged.
The case has prompted condemnation from medical and human-rights organizations. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) expressed concern over her detention and called for the release of healthcare workers it considers arbitrarily detained.
Rights groups have also raised concerns about Amin’s medical condition and her return to custody following a serious cardiac event.
Her detention comes amid broader criticism over the arrest and detention of Palestinian healthcare workers, with advocates calling for due process, access to medical care and greater transparency over the grounds for their detention.
